Care: Protect and preserve your art, your investments and your legacy.
It's
really simple if you just remember that if you're uncomfortable, your art
may be uncomfortable, too.
|
| 1.
Protect your artworks from strong direct light. Light can speed up
the deterioration of papers and can fade pigments, whether these are paints
or inks. Both sunlight and fluorescent light contain harmful UV (ultraviolet)
rays. Incandescent light, the kind in most homes, is diffused (safer)
when it illuminates the artwork indirectly. |
| 2.
If you store your artwork for a while before having it framed, store it
flat ( so that it won't develop a warp or a permanent curl ) and in a place
where there are no hungry little beasts lurking. Bugs, squirrels
and mice like to chew on paper, if they can get to it. |
| 3.
Do not store or display the artwork in damp areas. This contributes
to the growth of mould which causes discoloration and deterioration.
Dampness also causes warping. |
| 4.
Heat and excessive dryness can also be harmful to artworks, whether originals
or reproductions, causing brittleness and cracking. Please resist
storing your art in the attic or the basement, even temporarily. |
| 5.
Be careful when handling the artwork. The natural oils on your skin
can eat into the paints, inks, and varnishes on your artwork. This
is why museums and galleries say: "PLEASE DO NOT TOUCH THE ART". |
6.
If your artwork is shrink-wrapped on purchase or delivery, remove the wrapping
as soon as possible. Some plastics emit fumes that may react with
the chemistry of the papers, causing discoloration and deterioration.
Note:
The archival storage sleeves and backings that I use for shipping prints
and small artworks are acid-free. |
| 7.
If any artwork in your collection has suffered damage, secure the services
of a trained art conservator - don't attempt repair or control of the damage
yourself. |
| 8.
Framing and hanging artwork correctly is the best way to protect it.
If you're unsure how to, have a reputable professional handle it for you,
or advise you on how to do it yourself. |
